There’s no better place for summer fun in the Indianapolis satellite city of Danville, Indiana than the Gill Family Aquatic Center. A veritable smorgasbord of brightly colored slides, cool water, and laughing children, the Gill Family Aquatic Center is a watery wonderland for Danville children and their parents once the thermometer breaks 70. This Indianapolis area water park, though not on the scale of Splash Island or Holiday World and Splashin’ Safari, is one of the top things to do in Danville during the days of summer. Bring your kids, bring your book, and bring your swim trunks: the Gill Family Aquatic Center can keep you entertained all summer long.
Located in Ellis Park, the flagship park of the Danville parks system, a visit to the Gill Family Aquatic Center is the perfect place to cool off after a frenzied game of football or a delicious barbecue by one of the shelter houses. You’ll notice that the water park is called an aquatic center, not a pool; that’s because the pool is just the beginning when it comes to the Gill Family Aquatic Center. Towering over the landscape of Ellis Park are two massive water slides, each over 120 feet. If the water slides are too much to handle, there are plenty of other amenities at the Gill Family Aquatic Center. A zero depth entry is the perfect starting point for young ones, a swirling vortex makes for a tornado of fun, the lazy river is great for stretching out and letting go on a sunny afternoon, there’s a diving board for the professional swimmer in your family, and the splash pad makes for some interesting thrills at the aquatic center.
There are plenty of Danville events that happen at the Gill Family Aquatic Center as well. Swimming lessons at the center get everyone involved, from the youngest “Little Guppie” to older aquatic hopefuls. Water aerobics are a facet of Danville health at the Gill Family Aquatic Center; the program is low impact and great for getting back in shape after the long, cold months of winter (and the holiday feasting that goes with it). Speaking of feasting, the Gill Family Aquatic Center also has a concession stand. Just be sure to wait half an hour after eating before heading back into the water. If you want the pool all to yourself, the Danville Parks and Recreation Department allows residents to rent out the Gill Family Aquatic Center, a novel idea for summer birthdays, pool parties, and other events for Danville children. Unfortunately, the cold winters of Central Indiana prevent the Gill Family Aquatic Center from being open year round: the aquatic center’s season runs from April to August, so be sure to capitalize on the warm weather while you can!
The Gill Family Aquatic Center is one of the top things to do in Danville during the summer months. Within shouting distance of downtown Danville at 49 North Wayne Street, the facility is easy to access from any part of town, any day of the week (except during winter). The best part about it? Entrance to the water park is absolutely free, and rental rates and swim lessons are very affordable. If it’s summer and you’ve already sweated through all your nice clothes, the Gill Family Aquatic Center is the perfect place to cool off, have fun, and take it easy.
