Arts and Entertainment in Danville, Indiana
Danville, Indiana and Hendricks County have a thriving arts community where theater, music, fine arts and crafts are well represented. The Danville arts scene is respectable, though no competition for the thriving Indianapolis art community.
There are, of course, high school theater and musical performances to enjoy at Danville High School. The Hendricks County Civic Theatre offers several performances throughout the year in Danville. Each Civic Theatre performance could take place in a different location; the group currently doesn’t have a permanent performance space.
While the Civic Theatre was gifted a permanent site through donation of property in Danville, plumbing and zoning issues have delayed the holding of performances at the location. The Hendricks Civic Theatre’s recent performances in the Danville arts scene include Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Diary of Anne Frank, Steel Magnolias, and Seussical The Musical.
In another genre of Danville arts, Danville residents are among the members of, and volunteers for, the Hendricks Symphonic Orchestra and Hendricks Symphonic Choir, with the majority of performances held in nearby Avon, Indiana.
In 1996, The Hendricks County Arts Council initiated ArtsGo!, a now annual event that brings visitors from Indianapolis as well as other surrounding communities to Hendricks County. ArtsGo! is an annual art tour of Hendricks county, with local artists and art-related Danville businesses throughout the county opening their doors to the public for tours, workshops and exhibits.
Local artists open their private studios, numerous locations throughout Hendricks County host exhibits of multiple crafters’ and artists’ work, and art-related businesses hold workshops and demonstrations on the creation of arts and crafts.
Musical performances are included in the ArtsGo! events as well. More than 100 artists and musicians participate in the annual Danville event. Special maps guide Danville art enthusiasts to events and performances through the county.
