Danville Events: Family Fun Around Downtown
Danville, Indiana is a small, rural community just a few miles west of Indiana state capital Indianapolis. Since it is so close to the bustling Circle City, the town doesn’t try to compete in flashiness with the wealth of Indianapolis attractions, Indianapolis events, and Indianapolis nightlife. Instead, this historic city takes its own approach to bringing in visitors; Danville events are centered around the family, and are an excellent way to reconnect with your Danville children and put a smile on their faces.
During the summer, Danville events abound. Historic downtown Danville is the site of many goings on that qualify as major Danville attractions. Of interest to Danville music lovers is the Summer Sounds on the Square concert series. Residents and visitors alike come by the hundreds, toting lawn chairs, coolers, blankets, and more to the lawn of the historic Hendricks County Courthouse to hear some great Indianapolis music fill the streets of downtown. Held on the third Saturday of the month during the summer, the Summer Sounds on the Square series has featured such acts as Tim Brickley and the Bleeding Hearts, Jenny Devoe, and Stereo Deluxe.
A little more low key on the list of Danville events is the Danville Farmers Market. This is a great opportunity to get your hands on some fresh produce grown by farmers from around the Central Indiana countryside. Socialize with your neighbors, sample homemade jams and baked goods, and bring home crisp, delicious fruits and vegetables for your whole family to enjoy. Also during the summer, downtown Danville hosts a classic car show, a must visit for any gearhead.
Ellis Park, the main facility of the Danville Parks and Recreation Department, is another major site for Danville events. In the summer, the park holds concerts in its amphitheater. These concerts are a perfect compliment to the Summer Sounds on the Square concert series and bring some great Indianapolis musical organizations to the city, like the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, the Marshall Tucker Band, and the Hendricks County Symphony Orchestra.
Perhaps the biggest Danville event occurs during the holiday season and captures the imagination of kids and adults alike: the Winterland Light Show. This bright and jolly celebration of the Christmas spirit takes place in Ellis Park and features millions of beautiful Christmas lights strung around the whole property. Children can visit Santa, take in all the lights, and even take a carriage ride through downtown Danville.
Danville, though not able to compete with the huge range of Indianapolis fairs and festivals, has plenty to offer for those who decide to come to the town. The summer months are a good showcase of the music and produce of the region with Summer Sounds on the Square and the Farmers Market.
