Danville Education: Preparing Tomorrow’s Leaders

Danville High School mascot in Danville, IndianaDanville, Indiana is a satellite city of the vast Indiana capital, Indianapolis. It is located just west of the Circle City and is known for its historic downtown area, small town charm, and concentration on the well being of Danville children. Nowhere else is this focus on the family more evident than in the Danville education system.

Danville is home to the Danville Community School Corporation, an entity that encompasses four different Indiana schools: Danville Community High School, Danville Community Middle School, South Elementary School, and North Elementary School. The corporation also hosts Opportunity House, an institution where students can earn college credit.

Danville Community High School is determined to equip its graduates with the skills to succeed in the outside world. Throughout the school’s varied curriculum, critical thinking, problem solving, and active listening are promoted and encouraged. The high school is also the major purveyor of Danville sports; the school’s athletic teams are the spirit of the community and a huge Danville attraction, drawing spectators from all over the county. The school allows students to participate in cross country, golf, football, and that old Hoosier favorite, basketball.

Danville Community Middle School serves students in fifth through eighth grades. The school seeks to prepare its students to excel once they make the jump to high school, providing classes in math, social studies, English, and all other standard courses. In addition, Danville Community Middle School is the home of several extracurricular activities to help students find their niche. Science Club, National Jr. Honor Society, Spell Bowl, Middle School Band, Choir, athletics and more are all available for students at Danville Community Middle School.

The Danville education system encompasses two elementary schools that serve two different grade levels: North Elementary School and South Elementary School. North Elementary serves children in preschool through the second grade, and South Elementary teaches children in third through fourth grade. Both these schools offer excellent introductory education to get your Danville children started off on the right foot. Students engage with their classmates, their teachers, and the course material in a hands on, interesting way. The school even has a focus on reading: each grade has 45 minutes a day in which to read, play games, or socialize in the schools’ media centers and libraries.

The Opportunity House, though not a traditional Danville school, is the current evolution of Central Indiana Normal College, a vital piece of Danville’s history that has been around since the town’s inception. The Opportunity House both helps students struggling in their high school course work and allows students to take credits for college. It’s a progressive way for students to get a jump start on their careers or get a personalized study plan; all instructors at the Opportunity House are either on loan from Ivy Tech Community College or are teachers at Danville High School who are certified to teach college courses.

Danville, though only a small satellite of Indianapolis, certainly has the ideals and aspirations of a big city. It wants its children to be the best they can be, and to that end the Danville education system spares no expense. Though perhaps not as large or famous as the schools of Indianapolis education, Danville is preparing itself for a bright future.
