Danville Music: Symphonies, Marching Bands, and More

Danville, Indiana, a quaint community on the outskirts of state capital Indianapolis, is home to a surprising number of musical endeavors. For its small size, Danville music has offerings in almost every genre, from the sweet orchestrated sounds of the Hendricks Symphonic Society to the brash drumline of Danville High School to the whole breadth of popular music genres represented by local Danville bands. This Indiana town’s proximity to the Circle City has allowed its music scene to flourish and grow.

Perhaps the largest purveyor of Danville music is the Hendricks Symphonic Society. This Danville musical organization, founded in 2007, is a group that strives to provide only the best musical performances at reasonable prices. The Symphonic Society operates the Hendricks Symphony Orchestra and the Hendricks Symphonic Choir, two groups that perform both separately and together. The Hendricks Symphonic Society has orchestrated a variety of instrumental and vocal numbers in Plainfield, Avon, and Danville for area music lovers. In just two years, the group has attracted a large local following and has gotten tons of Danville children and adults alike interested in the masterworks.

Matching the skill and dedication of Danville sports with the beauty and complexity of Danville music are the two music programs at Danville High School. The Danville education system offers high school students roles in the marching band or the choir, two organizations whose members strive to be the best they can be. The Danville High School choir performs a few concerts throughout the year, all culminating in the school’s Spring Musical, a popular Danville event and a great place to see the future stars of Danville arts.

The Danville High School marching band is one of the most competitive high school bands in the state. They routinely present stiff competition at ISSMA competitions and has performed at a number of venerable Indianapolis events and locations, including Conseco Fieldhouse, the RCA Dome, and the NCAA Final Four Men’s Basketball Tournament. In 2009, the Danville High School marching band won awards at Avon High School, Brownsburg High School, Lawrence Central High School, and Ben Davis High School. In the state tournament, they finished in the top ten in the regional competition at Indiana State University, but failed to qualify for the ISSMA marching band state finals in the semi-state competition at Plainfield High School. However, these Danville music champions recently performed at the Bands of America competition at Lucas Oil Stadium.

In addition to these official musical organizations, Danville is also home to a number of local bands and music venues. The main venue for live music in Danville is the historic Royal Theater. Recently renovated and restored to the height of its glamor, the Royal Theater is a popular stop for Indianapolis bands and national touring artists. Often these bigger names are supported by smaller local bands from the Danville area. Recent events at the Royal Theater include Tad Robinson, Vagabond Opera, Carrie Rodriguez, and a Hoosier Holidays performance featuring Jennie DeVoe, Gordon Bonham, and others.

Though it’d be impossible for Danville music to try and stack up to the huge number of Indianapolis bands, Indianapolis music venues, and Indianapolis musical organizations, the small town does pretty well for itself as far as musical attractions go. It is the home of a flourishing classical music group in the Hendricks Symphonic Society, a very competitive high school marching band, a historic music venue in the Royal Theater, and a good number of local garage bands. What more could you ask for?
